Factors in a Healthy Childbirth Experience
There are lots of things that go into making a childbirth experience healthy and intervention-free. If you wish to have a natural childbirth experience, knowing a bit about these factors and how you can manipulate them before and during labor can help you have a healthier, more natural, and less painful experience. According to the book Healing Our Children, there are seven main factors that influence whether or not a childbirth is quick and safe. Here are those main factors and a few things you can do to help yourself in each area so that you are more likely to have a healthy childbirth:
- "The storage of nutrients in her (the mother's) glands, to support a strong and steady flow of hormones."
- "The overall tone of the uterus which is in part determined by the supportive ligaments such as the round and broad ligaments."
- "The strength of the pushing muscles, which include the psoas and the pelvic floor muscles."
- "The shape and relative diameter of the pelvis."
- "The position of the baby during birth."
- "The size and proportions of the baby relative to the mother."
- "The overall health of the mother."
This is perhaps one of the most overlooked parts of a healthy, safe childbirth, but it's absolutely essential. The process of labor and delivery is very much based in hormones - hormones that cause contractions, increase contractions, cause the cervix to dilate, and help the mother relax and feel lees pain. Without strong glandular support from healthy glands that are full of nutrients, hormonal problems can cause lack of dilation, increased experience of pain, and other birth problems.
The best way to have a healthy storage of nutrients in your glands before childbirth is to focus on a healthy pre-pregnancy and pregnancy diet, full of nutrient-rich animal glands and healthy fats that will help your body store more nutrition.
A stronger uterus means stronger, more effective contractions. Keeping your body healthy in general through diet and exercise can help the uterus become stronger. Uterine tonics such as red raspberry leaf tea can also help increase pre-labor contractions to strengthen and tone the uterus so that it is ready to push the baby out effectively.
Getting stronger pushing muscles is all about preparing your muscles for birth ahead of time. You can do this by practicing exercises like yoga and core strengthening exercises that are safe for pregnancy. Also, practicing Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles can help speed labor and delivery by making it easier to push out the baby.
At this point, there's nothing you can do to change the shape of your pelvis. However, you can open your pelvis up to its broadest by assuming pushing positions that don't involve lying on your back, as you will see women in traditional hospital movies do. Instead, try squatting or getting on your hands and knees, both of which are positions that help open up the pelvis to make it easier for the baby to get through.
One of the major problems with epidural births is that they numb the mother and baby and make it more difficult for the baby to assume a good position during the birth process. Being able to have control of your legs so that you can move into different positions - especially upright positions or all-fours positions - can allow you to help the baby rotate properly so that the smallest part of the head presents first, making birth easier.
In general, the body of a healthy mother will not grow a baby that she simply is unable to physically deliver. However, you can increase your odds of having a healthy-sized baby for your proportions by eating a healthy diet throughout pregnancy and by avoiding conditions like gestational diabetes. A healthier diet will keep the baby's growth proportional and healthy, and avoiding excess sugars and other problematic foods will keep the baby's overall size manageable for your body.
Mothers who have problems like high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and other health issues are already at a higher risk during pregnancy and delivery. If you can avoid these conditions through diet and exercise, that's one of the best things you can do to give yourself the ability to have a healthier labor and delivery.
These seven factors all play into whether or not a mother can safely and quickly deliver her baby naturally. The great part is that you can somewhat influence all of them by choices that you make before and during pregnancy and during labor and delivery.
