Does Soy Belong in a Healthy Pregnancy Diet?

Many women who are trying to eat a healthy diet during pregnancy wonder if soy should be a part of a healthy pregnancy diet. While soy products are often touted as health foods and are marketed as such, the truth is that they shouldn't be a part of any healthy diet, particularly a healthy pregnancy diet. There are two main reasons that soy should not be included in your diet during pregnancy: phytic acid and phytoestrogens.

Phytic Acid: This is a naturally occurring toxin that is found in whole grain products as well as soy. The main problem with this toxin is that it binds with valuable minerals, including magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, and calcium. When phytic acid binds with these minerals in the digestive system, the minerals aren't able to be absorbed into the bloodstream. A diet that includes much phytic acid at all can then cause deficiencies in these valuable minerals, which can cause serious problems with pregnancy and for the growing baby.

Phytoestrogens: Many different types of plants contain phytoestrogens, which are plant hormones that the human body can interpret as the hormone estrogen. These plant hormones occur in large concentrations in soy products because soy beans are full of phytoestrogens. In the body, these plant hormones can cause hormonal imbalances and may cause symptoms like pale skin and hair loss. Phytoestrogens may also impair conception because they make hormones unbalanced, and properly balanced hormones are essential for conception and a healthy pregnancy.

Is Soy Ever Acceptable?

While you can't really have a healthy pregnancy diet based on soy as your main source of protein, there are some types of soy that are more acceptable. These soy products are fermented, which makes them more digestible and which also gets rid of some of the phytic acid. Fermented soy products include miso, tempeh, soy sauce, and fermented soy drinks. Adding these fermented products to your diet once in a while is fine, but you should use caution when incorporating these products into your everyday diet.
